Idiocnemis inornata

Diagnosis

Male : Idiocnemis inornata is the type species of the genus and represents a distinct lineage within the inornata-group. The male is readily recognized by its unique ligula, which lacks a distal median cleft and has broad, rounded terminal lobes, a condition unlike all other members of the group. The head bears two small round turquoise postocellar spots surrounded by black but not touching the eye margin. The synthorax lacks distinct lateral colour markings, with only pale yellow-white areas below the lateral sutures. The abdomen has diffuse pale basal and subdistal markings on segments 3–6, while segments 8–10 are usually paler than the preceding segments. The superior anal appendages possess a single small inner hook on the distal half, and the inferior appendages are about two-thirds the length of the superiors. The posterior dorsal margin of segment 10 is distinctly upturned and armed with strong teeth. Female : The female differs markedly from other members of the inornata-group by its characteristic prothorax. The posterior pronotal lobe is raised almost at a right angle to the pronotum and is trapezium-shaped, making it one of the most diagnostic characters of the species. The frons lacks turquoise markings, and postocellar spots are absent. The synthoracic colour pattern is similar to that of the male but generally paler. The abdomen resembles the male in coloration, while the posterior margin of segment 10 is only slightly elevated and bears smaller teeth. The valvae extend beyond the posterior margin of segment 10 by almost the length of that segment.

Locality

Distribution

endemic to the Bird's Head Peninsula (Vogelkop) of western New Guinea. Examined material originates from the Karoon region, Manokwari, and Sorong, indicating that the species is widespread across the Vogelkop region.

Ecology

Habitat

No specific habitat description was provided by Gassmann. However, all known records originate from lowland forest areas of the Bird's Head Peninsula, where the species is presumed to inhabit shaded forest streams and small creeks, similar to other members of the inornata-group. This habitat interpretation should be regarded as an inference rather than a confirmed ecological observation.
