Idiocnemis australis

Diagnosis

Male : Idiocnemis australis is a member of the inornata-group. The male lacks postocellar spots and has only a thin black line between the frons and vertex. The distal part of the antenna is conspicuously dark. The species is characterized by the absence of black markings on the mes- and metepisternal fossae, the presence of a metepisternal stripe, and a distinctive genital ligula in which the lateral lobes are entirely reduced. The superior appendages are rather straight, with a small tubercle instead of a distal spine. Female : The female is similar to the male but has less distinct turquoise markings. Postocellar spots are absent or only represented by diffuse triangular remnants on the vertex. The prothorax has a characteristic posterior lobe, and the last two abdominal segments are darker than the preceding segments. The valvae extend beyond the posterior margin of segment 10 for almost the length of that segment.
