Drepanosticta seramensis

Diagnosis

Male : A brown member of the Drepanosticta moluccana species-group. Head with dark yellow labium and pale cream labrum, mandibles, and anteclypeus; the labrum has a dark brown anterior half. The rest of the head is mostly brown, with a conspicuous pale transverse stripe between the antennae and a distinct transverse occipital carina. Prothorax predominantly brown, without conspicuous posterior processes; posterior lobe with small but distinct triangular projections at the lateral corners. Synthorax dark brown, with mesepimeron and metepimeron slightly paler. Abdomen brown with darker posterior segments. Superior anal appendages pale brown, elongate club-shaped distally, with rounded tips and a distinct dorsal tubercle; inferior appendages brown, slender, and curved inward apically. Female : Similar to the male in head and thoracic colour pattern, but markings are somewhat better defined. Abdomen stouter than in male. Valves and terebra short, not surpassing the level of the anal appendages.

Remarks

Notes

Belongs to the Drepanosticta moluccana species-group, based mainly on the structure of the male anal appendages. Members of this group share a combination of characters including the absence of black antehumeral markings, an occipital transverse ridge not developed laterally into two acute points, a posterior pronotal lobe with short and undeveloped lateral extremities, and inferior appendages bearing median apical and subapical teeth. This species is closely related to D. moluccana from Buru and D. amboinensis from Ambon, but differs by the sharper lateral edges of the posterior pronotal lobe, the more elongate ventral club of the superior anal appendages, and less robust, less subterminally constricted inferior appendages. The monophyly of the D. moluccana species-group remains uncertain and requires further phylogenetic study.
