Drepanosticta psygma

Diagnosis

Male : A relatively large Drepanosticta with a predominantly castaneous-brown colour pattern and pale stripes on the synthorax. Head with bluish-white labrum, mandibles, and anteclypeus; the anterior margin of the labrum is brown. The remaining parts of the head are brownish black, with small transverse markings near the ocelli and along the eyes. Antennae brownish black with a pale pedicellus. The prothorax is castaneous, with the lateral lobes and median part of the posterior lobe darker. The posterior lobe bears paired processes with broad bases that are strongly constricted and expanded distally into a knob-like or club-shaped tip, lying flat over the synthorax. The synthorax is castaneous, with darker brown markings and pale lateral areas. Legs are dirty yellow with darker rings near the joints. Wings are hyaline with brown venation and pale brown pterostigma. The abdomen is mostly castaneous-brown, with segments 8–10 brownish black. Segments 3–7 have pale markings, including triangular and elongated markings on segment 3 and distinct markings on segments 4–6. Male anal appendages are diagnostic: the superior appendages are stout basally, strongly compressed distally, and possess a large obliquely cut terminal expansion; the inferior appendages are stout, nearly parallel-sided, and curve inward with the tip directed dorsally. Female : Similar to the male, but the posterior pronotal projections are much more slender, thread-like, and perpendicular to the posterior lobe. Abdominal segments 9–10 are black. The valves and terminal appendages are long, extending beyond the level of the anal appendages.

Locality

Distribution

Endemic to Bacan Island, North Maluku, Indonesia. Known from the Sibela Mountains and nearby localities.

Ecology

Habitat

Collected from primary rainforest streams at approximately 750–1000 m elevation (Van Tol, 2007).

Remarks

Notes

Belongs to the Drepanosticta lymetta species-group. It differs from D. bifida by its larger size, club-shaped posterior pronotal processes, paler synthoracic stripes, and longer posterior pronotal processes. The name psygma (Greek: fan) refers to the fan-like shape of the posterior pronotal processes.
