Drepanosticta penicillata

Diagnosis

Male : A large Drepanosticta with a simple prothoracic structure and highly modified male anal appendages. Head mostly dark brown to black; labium and maxillae pale yellow, mandibles bluish white without dark anterior border, and labrum whitish with the anterior one-fourth brownish black. The anteclypeus is white, while the remaining head surface is dark with a metallic sheen. The transverse occipital carina is poorly developed, with lateral extremities hardly visible. The prothorax is mostly yellowish. The anterior lobe is simple, while the middle lobe has small dark markings. The posterior lobe is pale whitish with a larger median dark marking and rounded lateral corners, without paired posterior processes. The synthorax is predominantly dark dorsally and yellowish laterally. Pale markings occur on the mesepimeron, metepisternum, and metepimeron. Legs are mainly yellow with darker markings. Wings are hyaline with dark venation and brown pterostigma. The abdomen is slender. Segment 1 is shining brown, segment 2 mostly brown with yellow markings, while segments 3–7 are mostly brown with yellow basal and lateral markings. Segments 8–10 are darker brown. Male anal appendages are distinctive: the superior appendages are dark brown, strongly developed, with an inward-directed tubercle and an elongated lower projection. The inferior appendages are pale yellow, strongly curved inward, and end in a rounded tip bearing a dense brush of short setae. Female : Similar to the male, but generally smaller. The abdomen is shorter, and the available female specimen was in poor condition; therefore, detailed female characters remain insufficiently known.

Locality

Distribution

Endemic to Sulawesi, Indonesia. Known from Central Sulawesi, including the Wotu–Tentena area.

Ecology

Habitat

Collected from a small stream near a bridge along the Wotu–Tentena road at approximately 300 m a.s.l. No further ecological information was provided.

Remarks

Notes

Distinguished from other Sulawesi Drepanosticta by the unique structure of the male anal appendages, especially the inferior appendages with a dense brush-like tuft of short setae. The species name penicillata means “provided with a small brush of hairs”, referring to the brush of hairs on the male inferior appendages.
