Drepanosticta hamulifera

Diagnosis

Male : A large Drepanosticta with a predominantly dark brown body and conspicuous pale markings on the synthorax and abdomen. The labrum is bluish white with a broad, straight brownish-black anterior border, although the labrum and anteclypeus of the holotype are damaged. The mandibles are bluish white without a dark anterior margin. The remainder of the head is black, partly shining near the eyes and otherwise finely textured, with a well-developed transverse occipital carina and angular lateral extremities. The pronotum is mainly dirty yellow, with brown areas on the posterior portions of the lateral lobes and the median part of the posterior lobe. The posterior lobe is simple, with its lateral portions semi-erect and without posterior processes. The synthorax is brownish black, bearing a broad greenish-white stripe over the metepisternum and a pale marking on the lower half of the metepimeron. The abdomen is mainly pale brown, with segments 3–7 bearing paired pale markings and segments 8–9 becoming darker. Segment 9 has a blue marking on the distal dorsal half, while segment 10 bears a blue dorsal marking. The male anal appendages are highly distinctive. The superior appendages are broad basally and gradually narrowed inward, with a large ventro-apically directed, club-shaped process. The inferior appendages are narrow in ventral view, with a clasp-like distal half; the rounded tip bears a dense brush of approximately twenty long, stout setae and a triangular tooth directed medio-anteriorly. Female : Generally similar to the male but smaller, with the colour pattern apparently more sharply defined. The terminal abdominal segments are very short. However, the available female paratypes are in poor condition and appear to be teneral, so details of mature female coloration remain uncertain.
