Drepanosticta gazella

Diagnosis

Male: Drepanosticta gazella is a forest-dwelling damselfly characterized by a predominantly black body and creamy-white marking. The head and eyes are black. The prothorax is flesh-coloured white, marked with a central black spot on its anterior lobe. Its posterior lobe is black with a long, thin ensiform process at each outer angle and pointed tip. The synthorax is mostly black with an ivory-white band on the mesepimerum. The abdomen is blackish brown, featuring small yellowish-brown rings at the bases of segments 3 through 7. Segment 8 is pale yellowish brown laterally, while the dorsum of segment 9 is sky-blue. Segment 10 and the anal appendages are black. Female: The female of Drepanosticta gazella has a blue little patch on the dorsum of abdominal segment 9. The posterior lobe of the prothorax is structured as in the male, though its lateral horns are slightly shorter and rounded at the tips. The ovipositor valves are very long, with the ventral margin appearing almost straight in profile and extending approximately 1 mm beyond the end of segment 10.

Locality

Distribution

This species is endemic to Java, where it is known from locations spread across the western and central parts of the island at elevations of approximately 90-1500 m above sea level. However, a recent report by Shahroni & Rahma (2023) showed that this species was found at the foot of Mount Penanggungan, Mojokerto. This finding marks the first time the species has been recorded in East Java and establishes its known easternmost distribution limit.

Ecology

Habitat

This species is found in small streams and seepages, in both primary and secondary forests. However, the extent and quality of suitable habitat for this species are estimated to be declining due to forest loss within its range.
