Diplacina torrenticola

Diagnosis

A medium-sized Diplacina resembling D. militaris in general form, but with more extensive creamish-white markings on the head, thorax, and abdomen. The labium and labrum are dull black, while the frons is black with a bluish metallic sheen and broad pale lateral areas. The thorax is black with broad pale antehumeral stripes, paired markings on the mesepimeron and metepisternum, and a large triangular pale mark on the metepimeron. The abdomen is mainly black with pale lateral markings. Segment 2 is creamish white posteriorly with a broad dark triangular marking, while segment 3 has a large posterior black triangle. Small whitish lateral spots may be present on segments 4–10, becoming reduced or absent toward the tip of the abdomen. The male superior appendages have a sharp dorsally curved tip and several widely spaced ventral teeth; the inferior appendage is relatively broad with a shallowly concave apex. Females are more extensively marked and can be recognised by the broadened lateral parts of abdominal segment 8, forming conspicuous rounded black expansions. The species inhabits very small spring-fed forest streams in dense primary forest, where adults usually perch in sunlit gaps several metres above the ground.

Ecology

Habitat

This species inhabits very small spring-fed brooks in dense primary forest. Adults usually remain within the forest and only perch in small sunlit gaps a few metres above the ground. They appear to be very shy.

Remarks

Notes

Females are readily distinguished from other Sulawesi Diplacina by the broad lateral expansion of abdominal segment 8. Males can be separated from D. militaris and Philippine species by the shape of the hamulus and the pattern of markings on the head and thorax.
